Food Geek Friday: Cocktail Time

The other evening, I attended a media cocktail tasting for Bailey's Prime Plus (off 7th Street in Fort Worth) new craft cocktails menu. I know, it's a rough gig but I don't mind taking one for the team.

I was officially there to represent 360 West Magazine, but I would be remiss if I didn't share with you. Keeping all these beautiful cocktails to myself is just greedy.

Bailey's Bar Director, Eddie "Lucky" Campbell, gave us a great cocktail education, history and story on the drinks while he and the bar staff whipped them up.

I love drinks and a show.

I think these drinks provide something for everybody. Some more savory. Some sweeter. All were fresh and great in the long, hot summer we're having. I don't know how many times I could mmmmm and oooooh over a cocktail, but I'm sure this tasting set a record. Let's dive in.

West on 7th

Milagro Silver Tequila, Lime Juice, Muddled Cucumber Mint, Bitter Truth Celery Bitters & Club Soda with a Salt Rim

Notes: the celery gives a really interesting flavor to this cross between a mojito and a margarita. And that black salt you're looking at is the 2nd most expensive salt in the world.

Sazerac

Notes: It's a classic, can't go wrong cocktail. And a strong one too. One of my drinking companions said this is the kind of cocktail you don't have until 1am.

???

Notes: Damn me that I don't remember the name of this one and it's not on the menu. Clover something. I really, REALLY like this one. The beautiful, bright pink color makes it look like it's way too "chick drink" for me but it isn't. It was bright, fresh and all berried up. My friends pointed out that the only thing wrong with it was that it didn't match my hair. I love that he spray-painted their logo into the foam.

Trophy Wife

Grey Goose, St. Germaine Liqueur, White Cranberry, Lime Juice, Lavender Bitters and Bitter Truth Grapefruit Bitters

Notes: Their answer to the Cosmopolitan backlash. (but seriously...she's tired and retired.) This one has much more complexity and edge that the traditional Cosmo lacks. A favorite among some of my drinking companions.

Watermelon Basil Gimlet

Wodka Vodka, Fresh Watermelon, Lime Juice, Cane Syrup and Basil

Notes: My personal favorite of them all - and closer to my hair color! Seriously. When I first tasted it, I decided that I was giving Lucky my first born. He must truly be lucky considering I don't plan on having children. You know they'd be tiny, redheaded terrors! I am all about summertime watermelon and basil and that they got combined into one drink just made me want to take a bath in this. Or at least until fall comes around.

Sloe Gin Fizz

Bombay Gin, Bitter Truth Sloe Gin, Egg White, Lemon Juice, Cane Syrup, and Club Soda

Notes: My drinking companions weren't as into this one because it "tasted like nothing." However, that's kind of what I liked about it. Plus, how can you not appreciate getting a little protein with your cocktail? It would be too easy to drink way too much of this pretty, little cocktail.

Rock and Rye Old Fashioned

Ri1 Whiskey infused with house spices and citrus, Angostura Bitters and Club Soda

Notes: An update to the Old Fashioned that Don Draper would actually get excited about. The spices give it a nice warmth that will make this drink rock even more when it starts to cool off.

Buckshot

Makers Mark Whiskey, Lime Juice, Peach Puree, Cane Syrup, Peychaud’s Bitters and Ginger Beer

Notes: Makers. Peaches. Ginger beer. It can't go wrong in my book.

Annie Oakley

Apricot infused Deaths Door White Whiskey, Lemon Juice, Cane Syrup, Angostura Bitters and Mint Garnish

Notes: My drinking companions liked this one, but admittedly it wasn't one of my faves. I wanted to like it more but I'm just not a lemon girl.

Pain Killer No. 2

Flor da Cana 7yr, Falernium, Coco Lopez, Pineapple juice, Orange Juice, and grated nutmeg

Notes: I liked this one a lot more than I thought I would. I've never been too much of a pina colada girl, but this spin was really quite tasty. Unfortunately, it does not come with its own cabana boy. However, after a few you probably won't notice he's not there.

Papa Pina

Portón, Pisco All Spice Dram, Lime Juice, Pineapple Syrup and Fever Tree Ginger Ale

Notes: Another one that I liked more than I thought I would. Then again, I'm all about some spices and ginger so I really should have known...

And because it's Fort Worth and coming up on football season (a religion in Texas) - they have a purple cocktail. Now, it didn't start out purple until...

NOW it's a purple cocktail.

I graduated from the other private university in Fort Worth, Texas Wesleyan, so I begrudgingly drank it. It was one of the better purple drinks in town. Tasted like a Sweet Tart. But until people start giving out discounts for wearing navy and whipping up navy cocktails, I'm not fully getting behind the purple. Since Wesleyan doesn't have a football team, I'll be sure to not hold my breath. :-D

(For the record, I did not drink all of each drink. That would have made for the most unproductive and painful next day ever.)

So there you have it! What's your favorite cocktail?
