Food Geek Friday: Chai Green Smoothie

I don't talk about it too much, but I'm all about a green smoothie. I'm not much of a salad or leafy greens fan, so it's a quick, easy and tastier way for me to get in this nutrient dense food. I won't go into all the different benefits of green smoothies. Suffice it to say there are plenty and there are also plenty of other websites that can tell you all about it. Google is there for you. Here are the two main things I know: I feel great after I drink one and I didn't need a high speed blender to make spinach disappear into the drink.

A while back I came across a smoothie recipe that called for mango, carrot juice and nutmeg. The flavor was great, so I threw in some spinach into the mix.(Spinach is the easiest to work with for blending and masking flavor.) This alongside some eggs made for a great breakfast that kept me going all morning.

A few months ago, one of my favorite blogs did this post on the benefits of turmeric and a recipe for chai tea. I made the mix but hadn't yet made the tea from it.

One morning, I'm pulling ingredients for my morning green tea smoothie when the jar of chai mix caught my eye.

What if I use that instead of nutmeg this time?

Total winner and I felt fantastic after drinking it.

But be careful when adding it in...a little goes a looooooong way. My first foray into this had some BITE!

Chai Green SmoothieChai Green Smoothie

Chai Mix from New Nostalgia

  • 3 tablespoons ground turmeric
  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground clove
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1-2 teaspoons cayenne pepper (optional)

Mix all ingredients together and store in a glass jar.

Smoothie Ingredients

  • Spinach
  • Frozen Mango
  • Carrot Juice
  • Flaxseed
  • Chai Mix

Directions

Blend everything together until well blended. Serve in cold glass.
