Hey Red! How do I declutter without getting distracted?
I get distracted by the things I'm decluttering. I am taking too long to decide what to do with some things. I have too many books too and I can get distracted by starting to read them to help me decide whether to keep them or not! How can I stop getting sidetracked?
Distraction is VERY common!! It's one of the top reasons why people hire me - to keep them focused and on track!
One of our best friends here will be a timer. I love timers because they create an optimal set-up for focus. It takes away all the worry of how long to work. Set the timer and focus until it rings. Worried that you'll get into it, zone out and end up being late for other appointments? The timer negates this by telling you when to stop. It's perfect.
Once you've got your timer, you have a couple of options:
- Turn decluttering into a race. Set a timer for 5, 10, or 15 minutes and see how much you can let go of in that period of time. Take the book, ask yourself if it needs to stay or go, then put it into a pile to stay or go. If you can't decide quickly, place it into a third pile to focus on when you have more time for distractions. Keep going until the timer goes off.
- Alternatively, let yourself get distracted and don't worry about it. Enjoy reliving some memories or diving into a forgotten about book. Allow the process to be fun.
Don't worry about the speed in which you declutter. Instead, focus on quality. I'd much rather see someone take 5 minutes to make the best decision for them rather than try to do it quickly and toss 15 things in 1 minute only to feel bad or less secure about their decisions later.
Whatever you do, focus on one area at a time until it's finished so that you still see progress, no matter how distracted you get!
